The Frank Grisanti Athlete of the Week recipients for the week April 2, 2018 are as follows...
7/8 Coach Pitch Division: Maddox Sims - Pirates
Coaches Comments: Maddox really exemplifies what this award is all about. Maddox is nice to all of his fellow players and helps the younger ones. He will play anywhere in the field (and CAN play anywhere in the field), will do whatever is asked of him for the team, is respectful of all of his coaches, and always hustles down the first base line.
9/10 Division: Spencer Moore - Cardinals
Coaches Comments: Spencer is deserving of this award not only for his great play on the field but his incredible attitude and willingness to do whatever it takes to help his team. Spencer went 2 for 2 at the plate this week driving in 3 runs. He also pitched and played short stop. On the mound Spencer pitched 2 1/3 innings giving up only one run and striking out 7. Spencer is also a great teammate. He is always positive with the other players on our team and is a leader. He has played multiple positions for us this year and even approached me about catching if we needed another catcher. He responds great to coaching and welcomes any advice on what he can do to become a better player all with a smile on his face.
11/12 Division: Samuel Hynes - Yankees.
Coaches Comments: I met Samuel in GBLs Fall league -- his first time playing in a league. He volunteered to be catcher and with only 2 practices under his belt.. I am now lucky enough to have him on the Yankees spring team. Again, he volunteered to catch as many innings as I would let him. Samuel is always upbeat and always excited to play every inning. This week he made a diving catch down the first base line. He then got up and tagged a runner who was getting back to first after the catch to make an unassisted doubleplay(as a catcher). Later in the week, he made another impressive catch on a high foul ball behind the plate. In 4+ years of watching GBL baseball, I have seen one or two catches made by a catcher and Sam just made two in one week.
13/14 Division: Owen Jordan - Cubs
Coaches Comments: Owen hasn't played baseball for 5 years, but he works hard and gets better every week. On Thu, in the last inning, down by 3 runs, with 1 out, facing one of the league's best pitchers, he got his first hit of the season, which started a 4 run rally to win the game.
